I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to request you will inform the Secretary of State that the Commodore at Hong Kong, in a letter dated 8th ultimo
has reported as follows :-
"H.M.S."Handy" went to Mirs Bay on 2nd "November, the "Otter" returning the same day. His "Excellency the Governor having informed me that affairs "have become quiet in the vicinity, I directed "Handy" "to return to Hong Kong on 6th November. It is no longer 'necessary to keep a ship there. Affairs at Canton have 'been a little unsettled on acacunt of increased kaxatio "which was resisted, the people closing the ward gates "and shutting their shops. It is expected that the
authorities will give in, and therê is no probability. "of rioting.
